Alongside propolis and royal jelly, manuka honey is considered an important bee product. Manuka honey is a very special honey from New Zealand. The Manuka plant (also: South Sea myrtle) grows and thrives exclusively in New Zealand, which is why only the bees living there can collect the nectar of the Manuka plant and thus produce the honey. Manuka honey plays an increasingly important role in our lives, especially in winter. It is always important to buy certified Manuka honey, as only a certain amount of Manuka honey is exported from New Zealand and therefore many counterfeits are on the market. Certifications and laboratory analyses play a very important role with Manuka honey!
All bedrop Manuka honey products are certified and can be used and consumed without hesitation.

Special products require many questions. With this blog post we would like to answer your questions about Manuka honey and hope to clarify everything.

What makes Manuka honey so special?

What makes Manuka honey so special, apart from the hydrogen peroxide, is the high content of methylglyoxal (MGO for short), a sugar breakdown product that gives New Zealand Manuka honey its effect. A normal blossom honey from Germany has an MGO of 80 mg / kg and the bedrop Manuka honey has an MGO of 400 mg / kg. The special New Zealand honey should have a minimum content of 400 MGO in order to develop its properties.

Which bedrop Manuka Honey products are available?

Bedrop offers you two different products, the classic Manuka Honey and the Manuka-Propolis-Anis Spray for your daily dose of Manuka - even on the go.

  • bedrop Manuka Honey:
High quality, certified Manuka honey in a 140 gr jar for big and small! If you like eating normal honey, you will love bedrop Manuka Honey. The taste is similar to blossom honey in Germany, with a slight taste of its own, a quality feature of our New Zealand Manuka honey. You can take the honey pure, in juice or tea. We recommend a daily intake routine so that the body gradually absorbs the ingredients and nutrients and strengthens them in the long term. The high-quality honey is too good for a spread, but if you want to enjoy it like this, let's go! :-)
  • bedrop Manuka-Propolis-Anis Spray:
The spray is an all-rounder product and your faithful companion, especially in winter! It contains everything important for the cold season: Manuka honey as a sweet base with a unique effect, propolis to support your vitality and aniseed, a well-known natural herb that is used as a tea, especially in winter for colds. With these three high-quality natural substances, you are always well equipped both at home and on the go and can do something good for your body with just 3 sprays.

What ailments can Manuka honey help with?

Manuka honey has a wide range of applications and the following applies in principle: if you use conventional blossom honey, you can also use Manuka honey. It is well known to drink a tea with honey in winter to prevent various ailments. You can use the honey for internal and external use.

It is important to note that when using Manuka honey, you should first check whether you have any allergies to bees or bee products. We therefore recommend carrying out a small allergy test:

Apply a little Manuka honey to the skin and wait for about half an hour. If there is no redness, irritation or itching after this time, you can consume Manuka honey. We recommend consulting a doctor if you are unsure, have concerns or are pregnant.

    Internal use

    Vitality

Our grandmothers have always shown us that honey can help with flu-like infections or the onset of a cold. When we were young, we used to drink a lot of tea with honey or take a spoonful of pure honey - this also works with Manuka honey. However, we recommend not using boiling water when stirring New Zealand honey into tea, as too high a temperature can weaken the effect. If you want to be quick and practical, you can use 3 sprays of our Manuka-Propolis-Anis Spray twice a day and you will be revitalized.

    External use

    Injuries / Wounds

Honey was and remains a well-known home remedy for injuries and wounds. Due to its high MGO content, Manuka honey is a great support for wound care. The fight against staphylococci, bacteria responsible for the formation of wounds, can be supported with pure Manuka honey so that wound healing progresses. The Manuka Propolis Anise Spray contains 70% ethanol and serves as a disinfectant, so it can be applied directly to injuries and wounds. The propolis-manuka film can form a kind of natural plaster. The antioxidants contained in the active ingredients of Manuka honey neutralize free radicals, thereby renewing the cells.

Can children and pregnant women consume manuka honey?

The consumption of honey is prohibited for infants up to 12 months. Natural products such as honey can contain bacteria that pose a risk to babies and can trigger botulism. The bacteria can enter the baby's intestines and stimulate the production of the neurotoxin.

From the age of 1, the intestinal flora of infants has matured against bacteria and so infants can safely take half a teaspoon a day. Pregnant and breastfeeding women are recommended to take 1 teaspoon per day pure or in tea to strengthen and revitalize.
The bedrop Manuka-Propolis-Anis Spray contains ethanol (food-safe alcohol) and should not be consumed by children, pregnant or breastfeeding women!

    How is Manuka honey dosed?

We generally recommend taking Manuka honey daily. The recommended daily dose is as follows:

    • Infants (1 - 3 years of age): half a teaspoon
    • Children (from the age of 4): a whole teaspoon
    • Adults: up to 2 teaspoons

What is the storage and shelf life of Manuka honey?

Natural honey is generally still good to eat after the best-before date, but we recommend that you observe our best-before date to ensure the right quality and effect! It should always be stored in a place that is not too warm and protected from light. To protect the Manuka honey from moisture, the lid should be tightly closed at all times! To prevent germs from getting into the honey, please ensure that you always use clean and non-metallic cutlery.

Can it be used for animals?

You can use pure Manuka honey for animals (dogs, cats, etc.) without any concerns. It can also be used internally or externally for our little lovers. Please check beforehand whether there is a possible allergy to bees or bee products and discuss this with the relevant vet if necessary.
