Bee bread

The bee bread serves as food for the bees and also supplies the brood. Flower pollen that is not fed is mixed by the bees with saliva, honey, glandular secretions and the enzymes contained therein and finally stored in the honeycomb cells. By mixing and storing the pollen, it is fermented and preserved. To prevent fungi and bacteria from gaining access to these comb cells, the bees cover the cell with a thin layer of propolis.
